# Italian interiors: Mediterranean style in the Danish home

Italian interior design is all about warmth, joie de vivre and the imperfect. It's sun-ripened colours, handmade ceramics and a feeling that the table is always set for one more guest. You don't need a villa in Tuscany or a whole new interior — it's about the right details and a slightly more relaxed approach to what a home is allowed to look like.

## What characterises Italian interior design?

The Italian style is rustic and rich in texture. Think whitewashed walls, natural materials, and ceramics with hand-painted motifs. Where Scandinavian design often favours the clean and understated, Italian style dares to be colourful and lavish — but always with a homely, lived-in feel.

## Colours from the Mediterranean

The palette draws from the landscape: lemon yellow, olive green, terracotta, deep azure blue and warm creamy white. You can start small with a [colourful bowl](/en/collections/farverige-fade-og-skaale) or a couple of [coloured candlesticks](/en/collections/farvede-lysestager) and build from there.

## Ceramics and dishes are at the heart of it

Nothing says Italian quite like hand-painted ceramics. A [ceramic dish](/en/collections/keramik-fade) with lemons, a [serving dish](/en/collections/serveringsfade) for antipasti, or a [bowl](/en/collections/fade-og-skaale) for olives belongs on the Italian table. Leave them out on display — they're as much decoration as they are tableware.

## Lemons and motifs from the south

The lemon is perhaps the most iconic Italian motif. It appears on [plates, jugs and dishes](/en/collections/produkter-med-citroner) and brings a splash of the Amalfi Coast into the kitchen. Shellfish and fish are another classic theme that fits perfectly with the maritime Mediterranean style.

## How to get the look

Mix old and new, and don't be afraid to combine patterns.
